Barley straw is a completely natural treatment, making it a healthy choice for your fish and plants rather than chemical treatments. Unlike harsh chemical treatments that can disrupt the delicate balance of your pond’s ecosystem, barley straw offers a gentle, natural alternative that’s safe for fish, plants, and beneficial bacteria. As barley straw decomposes in water, it releases compounds that inhibit the growth of algae, helping to maintain clear water and reduce unsightly green blooms. This slow-release process ensures long-lasting protection, making it ideal for ornamental ponds, water gardens, and fish habitats.
- 100% natural.
- Safe for fish, aquatic plants, and wildlife.
- Helps prevent and control algae growth.
- Easy to use – simply place string bag in your pond.
- Long-lasting effectiveness (up to several months).
How it works:
When barley straw is submerged in water, it begins to decompose slowly. During this process, it releases natural compounds, including humic acids and hydrogen peroxide, especially in the presence of oxygen and sunlight. These byproducts help inhibit the growth of algae by:
- Disrupting algae cell development, preventing blooms from forming.
- Oxidizing nutrients in the water that algae feed on.
- Maintaining ecological balance without harming fish, plants, or beneficial bacteria.
When & How to use it:
- Timing is key: Apply barley straw in early spring before algae becomes a problem. It typically takes 2 to 6 weeks to become effective, depending on water temperature.
- Placement: Float the straw near a water movement source (like a waterfall or aerator) to ensure oxygenation and even distribution of the active compounds.
The small 100g ball is suitable for up to a 500 L pond, the 200g up to 1000 L and the 500g up to 2500 L.
The 900g barley straw in the drop down box is a 900g plastic bag of barley straw. This includes 4 String Bags to pack yourself.
In store we sell a bale of straw which is approximately 5kgs.
